Designing building blocks for open-ended early literacy software

چکیده

English has a convoluted relationship between its pronunciation and spelling, which obscures phonological structure for early literacy learners. This implications software, particularly open-ended, child-driven designs. A tempting way to bypass this issue is use manipulables (blocks) that are directly tied phonemes. However, creating phoneme-based blocks leads two design challenges: (a) how represent phonemes visually in child-accessible (b) account context-dependent spelling. In the present work, we approached these challenges by developing set of animated, onomatopoeia-based mnemonic characters, one per phoneme, can take shape different graphemes. We applied characters construction-based app simplify independent word-building beginners. We tested during 13-week-long period with 4- 5-year-olds kindergarten classrooms. Children showed visible interest properly grasped principles their functioning. were not sufficient scaffold word building, leading children rely on other scaffolding mechanisms. To test characters' efficiency as mnemonics, evaluated effect speed accuracy finding keyboard. The results suggest there both who benefitted from task those performed better without them. factors differentiated categories currently unclear. help further research phonetic mnemonics learning making available community.

Guidelines for Designing Simulation Building Blocks

Instinctively, it seems better to support decision making by simulation studies carried out with domain specific simulation building blocks, than by simulation studies that start without the knowledge captured in these building blocks. However, only a limited number of project examples using simulation building blocks exist, which showed improved results as a result of the use of building block...

Building-blocks for Designing DI Circuits

abstract We show universality and minimality of sets of primitives, to construct delay-insensitive (DI) networks, which provide exibility of their use in synthesis, and eeciency in their silicon implementation. Several approaches that improve on recent designs, in the literature, of a modulo-N counter are explored. Rudiments of a general design methodology for such asynchronous circuits via a f...

Finding Building Blocks for Software Clustering

It is generally believed that good modularization of software leads to systems which are easier to design, develop, test, maintain and evolve [1]. Software clustering using search–based techniques has been well studied using a hill climbing approach [2,4,5,6]. Hill climbing suffers from the problem of local optima, so some improvement may be expected by by considering more sophisticated search-...
